Chloe turned eight in May of 2017. Their parents hosted a backyard birthday party with classmates and neighbors. Kids and adults alike enjoyed lounging in the inflatable kiddie pool and bouncing on the trampoline.

Chloe’s wishes were made over a cookie cake with blue icing that stayed on her face until a bath that night.

My first camera was a hand-me-down, Nikon D80 from my Aunt Devon for my thirteenth birthday. I spent a few years photographing friends and flowers before I saw a Sally Man photograph and really got the bug. I pitched a fit at school and requested appealed demanded I be admitted into the intro to photography course offered to upperclassmen. A ‘committee’ met over it and I was allowed to join second semester freshman year.

It changed everything for me. My interest in Sally Man was enough for the instructor to go off of, and I was soon had a list of a few dozen photographers whose work made me itchy to make something. A year later I had the trust of a patient photo teacher who let me keep equipment over the summer. I picked a roll of black seamless and Chloe and I made perhaps my favorite photographs in June a few summers later.
