2015

So much of what Chloe and I have made has come out of love and boredom. Chloe has always been outgoing, I’ve always wanted to make stuff. Most years, from the months of April to October, being outside is an insufferable choice only children can delight in.

When the temperature is triple digits, any fun you can conjure to distract from the heat is holy.

In 2015, Chloe partook in a lot of dress-up. A year into having a camera, I felt entirely qualified to document the fun.

At ten years younger than her next sibling, Chloe was always looking for ways to relate to the older grandkids. They’d start drinking coffee in just a few years.

Chloe always loved chewing gum.

In hindsight it was one of the ‘adult delicacies’ Chloe was usually allowed.

If we took a ‘family’ vacation, I stayed and lived with Chloe’s family.

It felt like heaven must.

Every time I saw Chloe they were taller, It was terrifying.

It felt like I could see them growing.

But this, being there when Chloe lost a tooth was a turning point for me.

I had accidentally been there for a major moment; to see it, to photograph it so I couldn’t forget it if I wanted to.

I felt the weight of it. I wanted, needed more.

I started bringing my camera, a Nikon D80, with me anytime I saw Chloe.

Afternoons babysitting and trips to the park became something whimsical.

Something that was ours.

As Chloe and I got closer, the three of us began to feel more like sisters and less like cousins.
